Stop Video Download For YouTube

27,049

As many of you might be well aware, the option on right click context menu of YouTube to stop the video from downloading was recently removed.
Stop Video Download For YouTube adds a "Stop Video" button next to the Subscribe button on YouTube, upon clicking on which, the video stops from downloading. As a result, you save your precious bandwidth.
Note :
* Only works for videos on YouTube.com. Doesn't work for videos embedded elsewhere.
* Does not work for HTML5 videos. Right click on a video and if it shows "About HTML5 Player" then the button will not work. For HTML5 vidoes, clicking on the button will pause the video, not stop it. This is because YouTube has not published stable APIs for HTML5 video.
* If you have joined the HTML5 experiment, leave it : http://www.youtube.com/html5
* On newer browsers, especially Chrome 32, HTML5 videos are force-played even if you have not joined the HTML5 experiment.
So, what can I do for HTML5 videos?
You can use YouTube Options extension (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/youtube-options/bdokagampppgbnjfdlkfpphniapiiifn/) to force Flash videos over HTML5. Once you have installed YouTube Options, go to Options > Show Advanced Settings > Layout and remove tick-marks from: "Hide description" under Appearance, "Hide branding and fix spacing" under Appearance and "controls when playing" under Player controls. Now it will force YouTube to play Flash videos instead of HTML5, and you should be able to use the button to stop the video. (The option to force-play flash video can be found on Options > Video > Video Codec. Flash is selected by default.)
Changelog:
1.4 (01/02/2016) : removed update url
1.3 (9/27/2014) : removed return statement that caused error in newer versions of Chrome.
1.2 (1/27/2014) : made it support Youtube 'red bar' feature (SPF), added a space before the button.
1.1 (08/18/2013) : removed pauseVideo option.
1.0 (07/21/2013) : created.
