Addition

The addition (sum function) is used by clicking on the "+" button. The function results in a+b.

Subtraction

The subtraction (minus function) is used by clicking on the "-" button. The function results in a-b.

Multiplication

The multiplication (times function) is used by clicking on the "*" button. The function results in a*b.

Division

The division (divide function) is used by clicking on the "/" button. The function results in a/b.

Equals sign

Equals sign is used by clicking on the "=" button. The equals sign, equality sign, or "=" is a mathematical symbol used to indicate equality.

Sign

The sign key (negative key) is used by clicking on the "(-)" button. The function results in -1*x.

Square

The square function is used by clicking on the "x^2" butto. The function results in x*x.

Square Root

The square root function is used by clicking on the "sqrt" button. This function represents x^.5 where the result squared is equal to x.

Inverse

Multiplicative Inverse (reciprocal function) is used by pressing the "1/x" button. This function is the same as x^-1 or dividing 1 by the number.

Sine

Sine function is used by clicking on the "sin" button. The sine of an angle is the ratio of the length of the opposite side to the length of the hypotenuse.

Cosine

Cosine (circular functions) is used by clicking on the "cos" button. The cosine of an angle is the ratio of the length of the adjacent side to the length of the hypotenuse.

Tangent

Tangent (tangent line) is used by clicking on the "tan" button. The tangent of an angle is the ratio of the length of the opposite side to the length of the adjacent side: so called because it can be represented as a line segment tangent to the circle, that is the line that touches the circle.

Pi

Pi (π) is used by clicking on the "Pi" button. The number π is a mathematical constant that is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, and is approximately equal to 3.14159.

Natural logarithm

Natural logarithm is used by clicking on the "ln" button. The natural logarithm is the logarithm to the base e, where e is an irrational and transcendental constant approximately equal to 2.718281828.

Parentheses

Parentheses (simply brackets, or round brackets, curved brackets, oval brackets, or, colloquially, parens) is used by clicking on the "(" ")" buttons. Parentheses in mathematics signify a different precedence of operators. Normally, 2 + 3 × 4 would be 14, since the multiplication is done before the addition. On the other hand (2 + 3) × 4 is 20, because the parentheses override normal precedence, causing the addition to be done first. Some authors follow the convention in mathematical equations that, when parentheses have one level of nesting, the inner pair are parentheses and the outer pair are square brackets.

Backspace

Backspace is used by clicking on the "<-" button. Backspace is the keyboard key that originally pushed the typewriter carriage one position backwards, and in modern computer systems moves the display cursor one position backwards,[note 1] deletes the character at that position, and shifts back the text after that position by one position.

Clear

Clear is used by clicking on the "C" button.
